Testing Scope
Toilet Soap, under IS 2888:2004, refers to a cosmetic cleansing product intended for personal hygiene. This standard applies to soap formulations in solid form, primarily composed of fatty acid salts derived from natural oils or fats. Toilet soaps are graded based on Total Fatty Matter (TFM) content and classified into Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3, where Grade 1 represents the highest quality.
Toilet soaps are used for cleaning the skin and are expected to be:
Free from harmful substances and grit
Smooth, uniform, and pleasant-smelling
Non-irritant and safe for daily use
Biodegradable and environmentally safe
Why It Matters
Determine Total Fatty Matter (TFM) to classify the soap into Grade 1, 2, or 3 based on quality
Assess moisture content and free caustic alkali to ensure skin safety and product stability
Verify pH level for skin compatibility
Check for free from harmful contaminants such as lead, arsenic, and microbial load
Evaluate lathering and cleansing efficiency to confirm functional performance
Ensure absence of synthetic colorants or dyes not permitted under cosmetic regulations
Confirm physical characteristics like hardness, uniform texture, and no cracking
Validate labeling and packaging compliance with BIS guidelines
